Day 1 Depart New York (JFK). Day 2 Step back in time as you discover the ancient cities of Morocco, set in the northwest corner of Africa. Upon arrival drive to Rabat, one of the Imperial Cities and the official residence of the King. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Rabat. Day 3 Drive through small Berber towns to the Imperial Meknes. Highlights of this “Moroccan Versailles” include the old ramparts, the Moulay Ismail royal stables for the sultan's horses and one of the most beautiful gates in Morocco. Continue to Volubilis, Roman capitol of Northwestern Africa with its well-preserved Roman ruins dating to 25 B.C. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Fez. Day 4 The 1,000-year-old city of Fez is the oldest of the Imperial Cities. Founded in 808 A.D., Fez is full of ancient mosques, palaces and minarets. Tour the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Medina. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Fez. Day 5 Travel through the Middle Atlas mountains dotted with palm trees en route to Erfoud, once a passage for the caravans that crossed from sub-Saharan Africa to the Mediterranean. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Erfoud. Day 6 Start the day with an optional jeep excursion to see the sunrise over the sandy dunes of Merzouga, at the edge of the Great Sahara. After breakfast, drive to Dadès ‘Valley of the Thousand Kasbahs’ to see the gorges of Dades and Todra. Pass the red-earth kasbahs, or Berber villages, along the Kasbah route towards Ouarzazate for your dinner and overnight at the hotel. Day 7 Full day excursion to Zagora in the Draa Valley. Surrounded by lush oasis and palm trees, it is the main market town before heading out into the Sahara Desert. See the Tinfou Dunes before returning to Ouarzazate for dinner and overnight at the hotel. Day 8 Visit the Taourirt Kasbah before driving to Ait Benhaddou, site of a most spectacular fortress, used as a backdrop for many films including "Lawrence of Arabia." Continue on to Marrakech via the scenic Tichka pass for dinner and overnight at the hotel. A PHOTO OF CLUB MEMBERS IN AIT BENHADDOU IS ABOVE. Day 9 The great city of Marrakech is an oasis at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains. Tour the Saadian Tombs, the Koutaoubia Mosque and explore the colorful souks and Djemaa El Fna Place with its medieval open-air market. Lunch at the hotel included. Overnight in Marrakech. Day 10 Head to the port city of Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city and business capital. Casablanca’s center is modern, but the old city harks back to the Casablanca of Bergman and Bogart. Visit the central market and La Cornice. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Casablanca. Day 11 Transfer to the airport for your return flight. |
