Overnight in Angangueo where we dine together at our hotel.(tba) Feb. 5 Today we check out and continue to Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary for our encounter with the Monarch Butterflies. These are best seen late morning when the sun warms their wings. In Angangueo we exchange vehicles for the back of an open truck as we drive through the pastoral countryside to the sanctuary trail. The path is groomed but sometimes fairly steep but with convenient benches for occasional rests along the way. Near the top of the trail loop the density thickens until we reach the center of the resting monarchs. Millions of monarchs cover the tall oyamel and fir trees, and, as the sun warms their black-and-orange wings, the butterflies fill the air. The sight can be spectacular and some Mexicans hold the Aztec belief that the souls of the dead are reborn as monarchs. After lunch continue to Toluca for overnight and dinner. .(B L D ) Feb. 6 Morning transfer to airport in either Toluca or Mexico City.
