BERLIN GETAWAY
Exclusively for Women
Day 1 – August 15 – Depart the U.S. for Germany by your own arrangements. Day 2 – August 16 – Berlin, Germany: Arrive in Berlin and proceed to baggage claim. After clearing customs, transfer on your own to our hotel, the NH Berlin-Mitte, a short, six mile drive from the airport. Berlin is the zeitgeist center of Europe; zeitgeist meaning “the spirit of our age.” It is the third most visited city in the EU for a reason: historic sightseeing, contemporary art, excellent food reasonably priced, and wonderful nightlife. A city with beautiful cathedrals, museums and tourist attractions, such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Berlin TV Tower, and Schloss Charlottenburg Palace, there is something of interest for all. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. Tonight, join other members of the group for a welcome 3-course dinner with wine and bottled water at the hotel. (Dinner) Day 3 – August 17 – Berlin: With so much to see, today is the first of two half-day city tours of Berlin. The tour includes Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin Wall and Museum. Checkpoint Charlie was the famous border crossing point between West Berlin and communist East Berlin. The Berlin Wall divided the city for nearly 30 years (1961-1989). During that period, there were many successful and unsuccessful escape attempts, the more famous of which are chronicled in the Checkpoint Charlie Museum. You will also visit the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum and the Museum Fuer Gegenwart, a massive modern museum fashioned out of a train station. Your afternoon and evening are at leisure. (Breakfast) Day 4 – August 18 – Berlin/Wittenberg/Berlin: After breakfast, depart for a half-day excursion to Wittenberg, a 70 mile drive by motorcoach. Because of its fame as the home of Martin Luther, the town is also known as Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Located in the Bundesland Saxony-Anhalt, on the Elbe River, Wittenberg was not bombed during WW II so it remains an intact medieval town. Here you will see the Stadtkirche Cathedral and St Marien Church, the second-oldest parish in Berlin. Your afternoon and evening are at leisure. (Breakfast) Day 5 – August 19 – Berlin/Potsdam/Berlin: Today’s full-day tour is just a short 20-mile transfer by coach to Potsdam, a city of lakes with wonderful 16th and 17th century attractions. Here you will visit two amazing palaces with a guided tour in each. The Cecilienhof Palace was the last palace built by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Afterwards, visit Sanssouci Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the former summer palace of Frederick the Great. Return to Berlin for evening at leisure. (Breakfast) Day 6 – August 20 – Berlin: Today’s second tour of Berlin features a visit to Museum Island with entrance to the fantastic Pergamon Museum, another Heritage Site re-created post unification in 1990. Museum Island is the name of the northern half of the Spreeinsel, an island in the Spree river in the centre of the city (the southern half of the island is called Fischerinsel or Fishers’ Island). The Pergamon Museum was planned by Alfred Messel and Ludwig Hoffmann and was built over a period from 1910 to 1930. It houses original-sized, reconstructed monumental buildings from ancient times such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus, and the Ishtar Gate. All consist of parts transported from the original excavation sites. Return to Berlin and enjoy some free time. This evening, transfer to a wonderful local restaurant for a farewell dinner with wine and bottled water. (Breakfast, Dinner) Day 7 – August 21 - Berlin/U.S.: This morning, one group transfer to the airport will be arranged for return flights home. (Breakfast)
